OFFICE GOLF 5.1

office golfIf you have not played Office Golf yet then you are missing the funnest time ever. We just played again in the office last week and laughed the whole time. There were three of us this time and let me tell you this can lighten your day up greatly. I have to video next time to show you the fun of this game.

Our first Par 5  hole was down the 50 ft skywalk from the Education Building to the Children Building, down a flight of wide steps and then to the left down another hallway, then to the right down another hall way and there was the hole. All along the way are hazards not typically seen on the golf course. There were open classroom doors, tables in the hallways, water fountains, and stairways in the background of the hole.

Our second hole was another Par 5 from the top of the balcony in the worship center, down a narrow set of steps to the bottom floor, across the stage, and down a few more steps in the front of the worship center. Then down to the center in front of the pulpit area and up the center isle to the back of the worship center. That was a challenging hole for sure as the center isle is on an incline and can be very tricky.

Ok! So we play a little golf inside the church. I can’t tell you how much fun and laughter this produces. It is by far one of the best stress reliefs you can do. Anyone can play! We meet people along the way like the cleaning staff, secretaries, and kids sitting in the hallway.

Be creative in where to set the cup! We placed ours in the hallways, in classrooms, and right in front of stairs so if you over shoot you are down the stairs for a penalty. Our next step is a Four Man Scramble of Office Golf! Now that will be a hoot!

Getting to the 21st Century Technologically Speaking!

ps3I am slowly moving into the 21st century for technology! Just last Thanksgiving I upgraded from a 32” regular television to a 48” Samsung 1080 flat screen mounted on the wall with a swivel base. My surround sound system is a 7 year old Panasonic and the DVD player does not work. I did subscribe to Netflix about a year ago but to stream a movie I have to move my 3 year old Gateway laptop over to the flat screen and run an HDMI cable to it and plug an audio cable in the front actually used for headphones I think. It gets the job done but the surround sound is lousy that way. I finally got tired of plugging all that in each time to stream a movie that I went shopping for a new Blu-Ray home theater system in a box.

I did some shopping on line then went looking. First stop was Sam’s Club. They had a very nice SONY system for $397 but I wanted wireless rear speakers and this one did not.  Next stop was Best Buy. They had a much better selection than Sam’s. I wrote down several model numbers to go research online before I bought. I was at Best Buy for at least 30 minutes and not one sales person asked if they could help me. I walked out the door empty handed!

I researched 5 systems online and read reviews. It is amazing what the internet will tell you. The first system I found a video review where the guy tells you all about the system. I was impressed and it was rated very high. The only amenity this system was lacking was HDMI ports. Its 2010 people! Why would I ever buy anything without HDMI. The next system I reviewed said it had wireless speakers but actually it did not and you had to order another piece to connect wireless. I also learned what “WI-FI Ready” meant. It means you can get it but it does not come with it out of the box. What I wanted is “WI-FI included”. There was lots of techo lingo I needed to learn. Also, all the low end systems only got you to 5.1 channels for audio quality. I wanted 7.1!

Frustrated, I quit looking because not one system had all the amenities I was looking for. I posted on my Facebook and Twitter that I was in the market for a Blu-Ray Home Theater System and asked for recommendations from anyone out there in cyber-land. Within minutes I had two responses. Both said go PS3! I reviewed a Play Station 3 and it had it all. Here is the funniest part! I looked on line for pricing and ended up buying the unit from my local grocery store for $299, HEB, for less than Best buy and with great service. I brought it home and it set up in 15 minutes. It connected to my wireless router, set up Netflix, and downloaded all the newest updates in minutes. Audio output up to 7.1, 160 Gig Hard Drive, and the best Blu-Ray out there I am told.

The next great part was that now I was running the PS3 directly to the 1080 flat screen via HDMI and my audio from the flat screen via S-Video and the sound is awesome. I thought I needed new speakers but now they sound fantastic again. I could not be happier!

So now I feel better about the 21st century and my technology at home. I can stream movies, music, the internet, You Tube, etc. right from the couch in the media room via the wireless controller. Life is grand!

The ABC’s Of Giving

abc'sOur pastor was doing a preaching series on the ABC’s…Attend Church, Be a part of Bible Study, and Commit to Serve. I suggested he add one more; the letter D for Donate to the Church. He wanted to stay with a three point sermon series so the D part never got added. So what about a 27 point sermon pastor? This is for the preachers out there looking for a great sermon series that would take you 27 weeks long; half the year! Here it is all done for you. I am working on  27 reasons to give to God and when that is done you could actually preach the same series for a whole year. What do you think about that preacher?

A-     Admit you should give

B-      Believe you should give

C-      Commit to give

D-     Do give

E-      Extra giving

F-      Forever give

G-     Give

5 Ways to Slow Yourself Down

rushingHere it is September and I have not taken any vacation yet for the year. I just cannot seem to fit it in. There is something always popping up the week I want to take off. I have meetings to go to and projects to finish. I have deadlines to meet and so much to do. Is there ever going to be time for ME?

Do you relate to that scenario in your life right now? Thursday afternoon at 4pm I was calling my eye doctor stating that I am having some issues with my eye. I recently had surgery for a detached retina. After giving the nurse my symptoms she says I need to come in on Friday, the next day. The good news is they have an opening on Friday at 11.30am. The bad news it is only in the Grapevine office. I live in Waco 90 miles away and my wife was leaving after work Thursday to go out of town for a girl’s weekend.

My dilemma was who was going to drive me the next day to the doctor. I made the dreaded phone call to my wife asking her if she could postpone here trip a day and drive me. Without hesitating, she said yes. It was a great trip and my eye was ok with nothing wrong. When we left to drive home, I stated that I was sorry it was a dry run and that I should have waited to see a doctor in Waco the next week and not have to drive 90 miles. I just could not call the doctor any sooner than Thursday since I was so busy at the office.

My wife made it clear to me that nothing should come before my personal well-being and that all that stuff could wait. She said meetings and projects take a back seat to my health. How true that is! I am so rushed and caught up in deadlines and to do lists that I do not take time off, do not eat well, and worn out mentally and physically. We all do that at times.

Here is an exercise to try that will certainly slow you down. If you are that hurried person never stopping long enough to get some rest this will help. You are going to look stupid doing some of these but the point is to slow down and take your time for you. These will help you in that process! It will be an adventure; just try them!

1.       Try washing your hands in public restrooms by lathering up with soap making sure you cover the front and back of your hands and having the soap on there for at least one minute before rinsing. Most of us just run our hands under water for a few seconds then drying and leaving. Most public restrooms use anti-bacterial soap but that will not be effective unless you leave it on for one minute. This will require taking a few minutes longer and not being so rushed.

2.       Try driving under the speed limit and coming to a complete stop at every stop sign while driving. Do not just slow down and roll thru looking left to right. Stop completely where your wheels stop, then look left, then look right, and proceed. You will get some honks and ugly looks from this one from the other rushed drivers.

3.       Try this one for men only. When out with your wife, make her stay in the car when you stop, go around and open her door, then when at the store, make sure you open the door for her there too, and then proceed. What we usually do is get out of the car, rush to the store, and motion her to hurry up. Slow down and be a gentlemen.

4.     Try making stops in the office to all your staff to say hello and good morning before going to your office and starting your day.  Slow your day before you start it rushed.

5.       Try this next week taking short 15 minutes breaks in the morning and the afternoon. Get up from your desk and walk around, go to the break room, or visit a colleague. The point is to slow down and not get so wound up all day.

Let me know how these work out for you. Your comments here!

What Good Are Performance Reviews?

appraisalToo many times, I hear the supervisor or employee asking how many high scores he needs to get the extra bonus for a performance raise! That is missing the point. Performance reviews are there for one reason and one reason only, to review an employee’s performance for a specified period. Getting the extra bonus is a by-product and should not be the goal.

Reviews are great for sitting down with the employee and really looking at each category and rate how they are doing. Talk about each topic like creativity, attendance, relationships, etc. Be open and honest and do not be afraid to address problem areas.

I had one employee that  told me she was looking forward to this time and finding out where she can improve. She had a great attitude! We discussed each section of the review. One area on the review I felt she was not up to par on, so we talked about how she could do better. It was not a negative at all just an honest evaluation and some help on how to correct it.

Make sure you highlight areas the employee has improved on since the last review. People want to hear they are doing better and that someone, especially their boss, noticed it. Then make sure you highlight areas that are over your expectations and why you feel that way. This is where the bonus can come in if you want to set it up that way. Performance reviews, if set up correctly, will reward those employees that have gone the extra mile and performed over your expectations.

This may sound harsh, but doing what is expected of you, is expected! You should be doing that all along anyway. The reward is keeping your job by doing it day in day out. Now, before you get bent out of shape on that statement, you can set up your reward process by giving a percentage to each overall rating.  Make the bonus different for the scale of performance giving the highest percentage to those that go beyond your expectations and a lower percentage to those just meeting your expectations and lower from there. The best part of this concept is the employee knows that during the year doing work beyond expectations will be rewarded more.

Performance reviews are a great tool for making better employees by evaluating the good and the bad and helping the employee make some positive changes. Also, include goals and what training may need to happen because of the review.

Performance reviews are good tools to use with your employees and can be a positive experience for both sides. Just do not be hung up on the bonus part and do not make it the focus. If you make the bonus the focus, I have found you do not get a true and accurate review.

Do you do reviews or not? If not, why not? Your comments!
