DO YOU KNOW WHAT ANTHROPOMORPHISM IS?

car namesNaming your car…its called anthropomorphism, the practice of suggesting human characteristics for animals or other inanimate objects, like your car for instance. Cars may technically be inanimate, but we do not necessarily think of them that way.

You can Google on the subject but I think it is very interesting that people name their cars and trucks. I used to think it was silly that my middle son has always named his vehicles. Actually, he started with naming the family cars as a kid!

One evening I came home with a gold 1998 Old 98 with gold interior and gold everything. It was gaudy for sure. I likened it to a tuna boat! My son came up with the name GOMER due to the fact it was a Pyle of junk to him. In fact, he was embarrassed I was even keeping it. My youngest son could not believe I was dropping him off at school in the mornings riding in GOMER. LOL!

Then there was ROSIE, our 99 Hyundai Sonata that was maroon.

Then HIS first car was a dark green Hyundai Accent he named BOOGER!

My next vehicle was a gold/brown Dodge pickup he named LEROY!

My wife drives a gold Honda Accord called GOLDIE!

I drive a 2004 Mini Cooper called STELLA after the actor of the Italian Job movie!

I guess it is all in fun naming cars! Makes for a good laugh now and then and people smile when they hear a name instead of the make and model of your car.

By the way, one day I came home from work having left GOMER at home that day and my middle son was out washing it and detailing it and now saying it was the coolest car ever. He had taken it for a spin and loved the way it took corners fast.

Leave a reply with your car name! We’ll compile them into the best, the worst, and the weirdest names and post the results here.

Ah, Gomer was a great car, lol. I remember the speedometer was broken, so I’d pull up next to people on the freeway and have my passenger peak into the other person’s car to see how fast they were going!

Gomer was actually named by John Tarrant, who said it was a pile of crap, like Gomer Pyle.

Booger was named by Ryan ‘Philly’ Leonard cause he said it was little and green, like a booger. This also prompted me to yell out ‘Blood Booger’ anytime I saw a red Hyundai Accent, ha!

You can’t forget The Beast, our Astrovan that mom brought home one day in preparation for a family vacation. I actually took The Beast on a few dates, believe it or not!

Leroy’s full name is Leroy Brown, after the song, Bad Bad Leroy Brown. Also, I don’t know if you know this, but when we picked Leroy up from your house last August/September, when I started it up and started pulling out of the driveway, Bad Bad Leroy Brown started playing on the radio – kid you not.

I also now have HOSS, my truck. We haven’t named Christina’s car yet.

While we’re on the subject, I also name my coffee makers. The one I had through college was Samantha, and then my wife’s was named Olga (cause I didn’t like it). Our current one is named Gretchen, I believe.
