You may be asking yourself what a team at work even looks like! Wherever you work, there should be a team and you should be on it. A team can be as few as two people working together to accomplish a common goal. What I see often in church offices is people working but there is no team.
The best way to see if you have a team or not is to first identify a dysfunctional team. If you have one of those then you surely do not have a team in the office. So, let’s look at 6 identifiers of a dysfunctional team.
#1 No leader and no plan
You may have a boss or CEO but they are not leading out. Leaders can either be passive or aggressive in their leadership styles. Passive leaders wear the title but do little to lead the group. Aggressive leaders know and understand their role and take charge in being the leader of the group.
#2 Undefined roles of the team players
Job descriptions are essential and play a huge role in team work! Without clearly defined roles the team members overlap duties and that can cause chaos in any office. Each team members has a role and should know what it is and carry it out well.
#3 Each member has his own agenda
This is never any good for a team and actually is the opposite of what a team should look like. The agenda needs to be the same goal and mission of the team and all members must be working toward that. Separate agendas cause an undercurrent in the office and will end up in resentment and bitterness.
#4 Individual members take all the credit
Every team should celebrate wins…together though! Never allow a team member to get all the credit for what the team does together. Watch out for team mates that do little of the work but get all the credit.
#5 Self-centered players
Closely related to #4 but this identifier will reveal the true ego of some people. “Look at me i am better than all the others” leads to bitterness and will tear down a team.
#6 Failure to communicate wth each other
This is the best identifier of a dysfunctional team because it shows all over. Trying to be a team but not communicating is just trying to fake being a team. People see through this and know what is really going on. A team that communicates are all on the same page and working like a well oiled machine.
Those 6 identifiers are the top reasons why teams get frustrated. You can’t win any games if you have team players fighting with each other or not working together. It all starts at the top! If the staff of a church are not having fun together as a team then no one is having fun.
