Surely you have heard of Dave Ramsey right? If not you need to check him out at Dave Ramsey and read what he has to say. I happen to be a huge fan and believer of what he teaches. Just so you’ll know I am a trained counselor for Crown Financial Ministries created by the late Larry Burkett and have taught that course many times. I have also taught Financial Peace University by Dave Ramsey many times and follow the teachings of both.
Here is a summary of what is taught in these courses, although not an exhaustive list.
- Pay off all debt
- Cut up the credit cards
- Have an emergency fund of at least 3 times your monthly expenses
- Pay cash for everything
- Invest wisely
- Take full control over where and how you spend your money
I firmly believe that every Christian should be excellent stewards at home and I think that all the items listed above are obtainable to anyone who has a passion to be debt free. However, I ask this question,
“Can a church operate using the Dave Ramsey course and have Financial Peace”?
We ask our congregants to take the course and become debt free so they can become generous givers not only to the church but to those in need around them. What would keep the church from operating that way also? Maybe the church needs to pay off their debt, not use credit cards and pay cash, have an emergency fund of at least three months expenses, and not borrow money any more. What would that look like to you? Is it possible?
It would take a radical re-thinking and a move that would take boldness and courage! Tell me your thoughts even as a lay person or if you are on staff and reading this what are your thoughts and comments.
Q. Can a church operate like Dave Ramsey teaches!

Absolutely churches should operate with no debt, 3 months emergency fund, etc. as any and all businesses should. That way churches can offer more of its contributions to help the needy, instead of paying interest to banks. One of the things I’d like to see churches do is to quit spending so much money on big, beautiful modern buildings and more on those who have no meals. The competitiveness in our area is insane – state of the art buildings sitting on prime waterfront footage. This is just so unnecessary to the churches’ purpose.
Although I understand that churches are businesses, the beneficiaries of the congregations’ generosity needs to be those who are unable to take care of their own needs.
Thanks for article. Everytime like to read you.
