Church’s Need to Address Technology and Social Media

I just returned from a national conference in Long Beach, Cal and was introduced to so much technology it was amazing.  I sat in  class after class hearing those on the leading edge of it all tell how churches have a huge opportunity to reach people  in a  whole new way. Steve Hewitt editor of CCM, Christian Computing Magazine, laid out so much new tech coming out it was mind boggling. I was was mesmerized with the fun new stuff to look forward to. The young generation is not the only age group using all this stuff either.

Look at Facebook, i have friends of all ages on that! I am creeping up on 55 and now blogging, twittering, and Facebooking! Email is dead according to some tech guru’s i heard from! Text messaging is in and social media is the craze! While siting in one of the classes a participant snapped the speakers picture with his IPhone and instantly published it on his blog site.

What’s in it for churches? Connectivity with members and prospects! We can now get connected and stay informed in a matter of seconds. Sermons streamed on -line for the whole world to access; prayer needs get texted to hundred of prayer warriors instantly; information about programs of the church on-line with video feeds about the event; the possibilities is endless.

It’s time for churches to seize the opportunity of technology and reach people for Christ across the globe! What is your church doing about technology? Are you in?

One Response to Church’s Need to Address Technology and Social Media

  1. Eric says:

Rick, so glad to see you fired up about connective technologies and building online community. I agree — God gave us these tools let’s use them for His glory and to the best of our ability. The Christian culture in the U.S. has generally been a slow adopter of technology. We ought to be out front trying the latest trends and praising or slamming them after we understand them. Slamming something without attempting to understand it is ignorance. Mike Hyatt has a good article on his blog about ministry leader tech adoption in his post on the Twitter life-cycle. http://bit.ly/2kL6S8 Hope this helps.
