I started out Saturday at 6.30 am buying Shipley Donuts for the All -Church Work Day. I arrived at the church by 6.50am and was of course the first one there. By 7.30 people started arriving more than willing to take on a task or two for the work day. The maintenance staff were supposed to be there by 7.30 am to have all the supplies ready but that turned out to more like 8am.
The day went very well though and amazing enough by 11.30am all the tasks on our list had been completed. By noon i was at home eating lunch with the wife. The afternoon was filled with more projects around the 0ur house and then time for dinner around 6pm. With chicken on the grill and side dishes cooking i get that dreaded phone call on a Saturday evening from one of the staff. You know those calls, the ones you know are just going to be trouble simply because it is Saturday night and your going to be the only one available or even willing to help.
A church bus had traveled 90 miles south with church members aboard and a staff member driving on the way to a baseball game. The bus died and the electrical system completely out. It is 6pm and you know where this call was going! “Yes, my wife and i will bring you another van to get you on your way!” We arrived on the scene by 7.40 and there was the van abandoned on the side of Interstate 35 in the middle of construction on a very busy Saturday night.
Fortunately there was a Ford dealership right across the access road and i was able to locate a wrecker service within the next 30 minutes. We arrived at the deserted For dealership but lucked into finding one man there that was extremely helpful. We met the wrecker there, unloaded, filled out the long paperwork, and started our trek back home. A stop for dinner down the road and we were back home by 10.30pm. All in a days work right?
The lesson to learn here is don’t answer the phone on Saturday nights!
